Must go: Three events in Amsterdam that you should join

Amsterdam Art Weekend 2016: November 24-27

The Dutch capital is the centre of the international art world during Amsterdam Art Weekend!

Bigger than ever

The fifth edition of Amsterdam Art Weekend will be bigger than ever, with more artists participating, and more than 60 venues where visitors can admire their work.

The venues include galleries and museums like Stedelijk Museum, EYE, Foam and the Oude Kerk. The heart of the festival will be at the Stadsschouwburg on the Leidseplein.

Amsterdam Art Weekend presents four days of diverse art exhibitions, as well as lectures, film screenings, artist talks, performances, tours and parties.

Last year’s Amsterdam Art Weekend welcomed about 26.000 visitors, and this year is expected to be even more successful.

Rijksakademie artist

The 45 resident artists of the Rijksakademie will be opening the doors to their studio and presenting their most recent works.

Other programmed events include displays by private collectors, and a collaboration with the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) to present films by international film artists.

Gallery Night

Following the example of artistic cities like Berlin and London, Amsterdam Art Weekend will be hosting a Gallery Night on November 25, during which all participating galleries gather to toast all the special contemporary art on show.

Night of Jazz 2016- 26 November

Jazz clubs all across the Netherlands are getting ready to host the second edition of the annual Night of Jazz.

Celebration of jazz

The Night of Jazz (Nacht van de Jazz) is a celebration of the grooviest of music genres, with concerts, film screenings, exhibitions and Djs to be admired in venues in 11 cities throughout the country. And it’s not just the night of the 26, the whole weekend will offer specially themed events.

Both local and international jazz musicians will be sharing their music, celebrating the great diversity and high quality of modern live jazz.

Because there are so many Dutch jazz venues, and such an intricate circuit within the local music community, an amazing live jazz concert is often closer than you think.

LIGHT | international dance at the Meervaart- 16 December

Some of the best musicians, singers and dancers from around the world are brought together in the large-scale and unique multidisciplinary dance-opera LIGHT.

“LIGHT”

LIGHT is an inspired gathering of music, dance and cultures from around the world, coming together to explore interaction with live music.

Rather than relying on a set story, dance and music drive each other to new heights, inspiring dynamic and moving group performances by diverse and talented artists.

International cast

The international cast provides an abundance of ideas, cultures and impressions that are molten together into one performance.

In LIGHT, everything sounds and happens at once. It flows, collides, intermits and enhances. And yet, each individual performer maintains a unique style and identity.

Choreographers, composers and performers

Beloved choreographers Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana work together with “rising star” composer Iwan Gunawan.

Also included are the praised gamelan ensemble Kyai Fatahillah, as well as multiple dancers of Indonesian and Western origin.

The company is further enhanced by dancing opera singers Bernadeta Astari and Ekatarina Levental.

With this large-scale and unique multidisciplinary dance-opera, LeineRoebana and Chassé Theater celebrate their respective anniversaries in a spectacular fashion.

About the Meervaart

The Meervaart is a theatre, as well as a congress and event centre, located in the Meer en Vaart in Amsterdam.

Their spacious venue is the place to be for all kinds of lauded international comedians and other performers, as well as special productions and interesting collaborations with other cultural organisations and artists.
